We have always been a family run business, small and friendly, with our customers best interests at heart. The Clarke family have long lived in West Oxfordshire. Way back in 1824 Thomas Clarke became an apprentice Tinman to John Taylor of Burford.
Times were rather stricter and more austere than the present.
In his indentures he was contracted to serve his master faithfully for the ensuing eight years and during this time was forbidden to; play at cards, dice tables, to haunt Taverns, Play Houses nor absent himself from his master’s service day or night unlawfully.
Thomas’s son, John, started a Builders Merchants in Witney which was taken over by his son Harry. This business continued until the outbreak of World War Two when the yard was used as a depot by the army.
Harry’s son, Cyril, revived the business after the war, becoming a Limited Company in 1961. Today the managing directors are Cyril’s sons, John and Graeme Clarke. Forty percent of the workforce are members of the family.
